Safeguarding Digital Images

The Internet has become the de facto home for millions of photographs. Every day thousands of those images are downloaded without regard for the owners' rights. Sometimes this is of little importance as the photographer has taken the trouble to use images of such a small resolution that they have no commercial application and so their theft will not undermine his business or artistic reputation in any major way.

This is not always the case, however, and it not always easy to exert and pressure on those who have misappropriated images perhaps claiming them as their own work, publishing, selling or entering them in competitions.

There are three tools that can be used to minimise intellectual theft and copyright violation of this type: digital searches, physical watermarking and digital watermarking.

Digital searching is a system of scanning the World Wide Web to identify pictures that have been published without the photographers' permission. www.copyscape.com searches for your content on other web pages. It requires registration but provides a straightforward way to discover if your material is on web sites where it should not be. Copyscape handles any type of copyright material, not just pictures.

Physical watermarking places a traditional copyright label on the image. Open the picture in an editor like PaintShop Pro or Photoshop and from the Insert menu choose Symbol (different versions may have the item under other Menu headings) and choose the copyright symbol. Next type your copyright text, eg, © Practicaps Images. Choose a discreet size and colour and place the in an appropritae part of the picture.

While this isn't hard, it is time consuming if you have a large number of images to mark, so select your copyright notice, then choose a brush from the tools menu and create a custom brush from the Options Menu. Now whenever you want to add a copyright notice, you can choose the brush from the tools pallette and add you notice with a single click.

Electronic Copyrighting involves adding personalised information to your picture which is invisible to the viewer, but can be read with the EXIF data. To see the data stored with your image, right click the image ios your file browser and choose options. You will see the camera settings and a lot of other information, more of which is available on the Advanced tab. This data can also been seen in an editor under the Image menu. By registering with Digimarc International, this and other identifying data can be included in an international register, offering proof of ownership in case of dispute.

Free downloads are available to enable the digital watermark to be read by Photoshop (recent versions of PaintShopPro support it as standard)

and subscription to the service is available at the same site.
