Healthy Sex
According to a survey conducted by Durex (the people who make condoms), people around the world would rather go out with their friends than have sex. More than a fifth (22%) choose their peers rather than having sex with a partner (19%), while a further 10% prefer to either play sport or go shopping. Not you, of course...because you know how good sex is for you, both physically and mentally. That’s not just my opinion - more and more studies are showing increased emotional and physical benefits from frequent sex... provided of course, it’s safe sex. Here’s a short list of research findings about how healthy, frequent sex affects people: Lower mortality rates: you live longer and get sick less often Reduced risk of prostate cancer. Improves posture. Boosts self esteem: you feel better about yourself Makes you feel younger and more vigorous Firms up your tummy and buttocks Keeps spouses connected emotionally Offers pain-relief: people report less pain and cope better with what they do have A positive attitude to life Lowers your risk of heart disease Makes you a calmer, less irritable person Improves fitness levels Reduces depression Two effects I specially like: it improves your sense of smell and, according to psychologists in Pennsylvania, helps to ward off colds and flu. They found that people who have sex once or twice a week get a boost to their immune systems by raising immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels. Compared with people who completely abstained, there was a tiny rise in IgA for those who sex once a week or less, but people enjoying one or two sexual encounters each week had a 30% rise in levels. All things in moderation, though: the study participants who had very frequent sex - three times a week or more - had lower IgA levels than the abstainers. Of course, it could just be that healthy people with good IgA levels are more likely to have sex more often! As for that drop when you have more sexual encounters, one scientist suggested that very frequent sex might suggest obsessive relationships, relating to anxiety rather than pleasure, and stressful relationships lower IgA. Where do all these health benefits come from? Some may be from exercise. "Sexual activity is a form of physical exercise," according to Dr. Michael Cirigliano of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Making love three times a week burns around 7,500 calories in a year -- the equivalent of jogging 75 miles. A night of love making and heavy breathing can raise the amount of oxygen in cells, helping to keep organs and tissues functioning at their peak, and of course, “any kind of physical exercise is going to increase testosterone," states Dr. Karen Donahey, director of the Sex and Marital Therapy Program at Chicago's Northwestern University Medical Center. Testosterone is believed to help keep men's bones and muscles strong, and the hormones that are released during sexual excitement and orgasm can also increase pain thresholds. That in turn can lower levels of "arthritic pain, whiplash pain and headache pain," according to Dr. Beverly Whipple, president-elect of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists. Making love regularly can lower levels of the body's total cholesterol slightly, while positively changing the ratio of good-to-bad cholesterol, which may explain the positive effects on heart disease. Some of this effect is probably due to DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), a popular supplemental hormone, released naturally during lovemaking. Just before orgasm and ejaculation, DHEA levels are three to five times higher than usual. Should you take all this seriously? Probably not. Most of the research is based on laboratory studies and questionnaires. The definitions of what constitutes sex, or a “sexual encounter” are not consistent, and even if they were, real-life sexual behaviour is so diverse that what is true in a study may not be true for you or me at all. For instance, is all sex as athletic as a 100 metre dash? I don’t think so! Even if it was, some of us run faster and with greater effort than others. Lot’s of us prefer a gentle stroll down memory lane! |
