Cryptic Crosswords There is nothing more satisfying than a cryptic crossword, nor more frustrating the the last word in a cryptic that refuses to unravel for you. Nor is their a greater sense of let-down than when you look at the clues and they all just fall into place without any appreciable struggle, a feeling only partially ameliorated by the confusion evident on the face of another puzzler who can't see how you arrived at the solution. Cryptics actually require very little skill: they are more a question of mindset and a little general knowledge. Once you have fathomed the approach of any given cryptographer, their puzzles tend to be relatively easy to solve, as they use only a limited range of clues and rather predictable way of obscuring or disguising the answers. I have on my bookshelf a set of puzzles labelled "impossible" and they have been! I guess you could say I have not yet mastered the composers mind-set! Or am I wrong? Do cryptics require some skill after all?
